Aquarelle
25th September, 2003
Dear Friends
His style will be forever ‘aquarelle’
Holidays give us the opportunity to do things we do not normally do. Art galleries and exhibitions offer some mild fascination for me. One of the exhibitions that I came across by Marko Jezernik had a prospectus describing his work in exotic language and then concluded that ‘his style would be forever aquarelle’. I must confess to having no idea what that meant, but from the examples it seems that objects are sketched with pencil (actually Chinese ink) supported by a wash of water colour.
I grew up believing that reality was defined by clear lines, each of which was a boundary containing a colour that was a property of the object. Indeed our children are praised in church for being able to colour between the lines and demonstrate their fine coordination. Sometimes we confuse our belief systems. We try to get the colour and warmth of grace to fit inside the lines and framework of law, believing the realities to be one and the same. Then we find ourselves surprised by the conflict.
The ‘aquarelle’ style reminds me that colour and outline do different things. The colour of grace creates mood and attitude. It diffuses through boundaries to bring life and strength and humour to the starkness of law. It is not a ‘band aid’ for pardoning the breach of law.
Very little in life can be defined by the neatness of mathematical lines. Our lives are lived in tension between contrasting values.
Thank you for enriching the lives of our community with colours of grace.
May your style be ‘forever aquarelle’.
Yours truly,
