Be Inspiring

Between George’s Poodle and God’s Rottweiler things may well be going to the dogs?  Popes, Priests, Princes and Politicians have in turn, vied for our

attention.

Why are so many in our society inspired by an enfeebled mute pontiff, then find themselves irritated by talkative politicians?   Inspiration is curious!

From a spiritual perspective some have the idea that inspiration happens

through some laser like process. A channel of thought issued from a divine

power received and written down by receptive agents.  For others, the inspiring Spirit is an ether like influence filling our existence. We become aware of this energy by exercising spiritual disciplines like prayer, meditation and reflection.

Inspiration is characterised by a sense of connectedness.  From a third

perspective; inspiration is within. It is either derived through the exercise of

higher levels of perception or gained through education and opportunities that

lead to greatness. We admire these people because they appear to have some virtue to which we aspire.

Lance Secretan in his book ‘Inspire’ offers a sociological view: He suggests that inspiring people embody a cause. We found John Paul II inspiring because of his unwavering commitment to the sacredness of life for instance.

Inspiring people are authentic (“not phony tony’s”). They embody and practice what they preach or represent. We are inspired by people who serve causes greater than themselves. Too many leaders are thought to be self possessed. Trust, itself a temperamental quality, is a key issue in current politics. We want people to be faithful to their word and to their stated policies. Inspirational characters love people; they enjoy touch and presence and are naturally empathic. They have a warmth seemingly absent in technocrats. Finally, we admire people who are effective, people who get things done.

This is a tall order for most mortals, but we have been given an example in

Christ Jesus who embodied all of the above. He gave us the opportunity and a cause to inspire and be inspired in His name rather than our own. We do not have to be dogged by labels which mis-represent our intent.  How is it with you?

Are you willing to embrace the cause of Christ, to live authentically and offer

sacrificial service as a part of your faith? Are you willing to place your trust in

those around you and to share your time and love in your community?  Do you have the courage to do what you were made to do?

I challenge you to make the difference in the lives of others and inspire them by your example and caring. I challenge you to serve Jesus,

`I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'   Matthew 25:40 (New Living Translation)

Yours truly,

Victor
