Don’t be invisible
Have you ever seen a snail? If they are around they can be easy to find. All you have to do is follow their trail. Do you know what their trail is? It looks like a silvery line and shows you everything they have touched. It’s pretty hard hide if everyone can just follow along behind you.
There are beetle that fly at night that make a little burst of light as they fly. On and off their little light glows as they fly through the air. How can you hide if you’re flashing a light all the time? In some places, people can catch them and put them in a jar so they can use them as lanterns in the night. It helps people to find their way.
Jesus asked people who know about him to be like salt and to be like light. Can you guess why? How can a person be like either? What did he mean?
Jesus was explaining to his friends that everyone has the ability to affect the people around them. We can influence the way other people think and behave by how we are. By how we think and behave and by what we say.
Salt changes the taste of the things it touches, just like a snail leaves a trail on the things it runs across. We can change how our friends and family behave. Ever been in a group of friends and just one sad person makes everyone sad? Or one person who wants to do something bad gets everyone else to do it? In the same way you can help your friends and family to do good things by being the one to suggest good things to do or see or by doing good things so others can follow your example.
We don’t always feel like being the good one – but you never know who is depending on you to make the difference!
Sometimes it is easier to be real quiet and hope no one notices us. That way, we think we won’t have to do the right thing.
