Don't Lie to Yourself
Have you ever felt so fed up that you could just sit down and cry? Everything seems to conspire to chain you to your current situation? Everything builds on everything else and it just seems to go on and on? You just feel so tired and worn out, and weary, and even when you say “enough”, everything just keeps on going on and on in the same way? Just more and more of the same?
I’ve been feeling that way lately and asking myself why I keep creating, or putting myself in, unbearable situations. Well, no, it wasn’t all my doing, but I figure the only way I can change my world is to change me so I’m holding myself accountable and expecting some answers.
Looking inside ourselves isn’t as easy as accusing others since it demands ruthless honesty and can lead to unexpected results. It was much easier and much less scary, to just feel fed up and trapped. To keep trying to keep up. But you know, that isn’t the way of freedom and when Christ said He came to set us free, I think He may have meant from ourselves also. You know from all the ways of thinking and behaving that we have that lead to us imprisoning ourselves in unintended or undesirable situations.
Maybe it’s time for me to stop pretending that life is against me, or that I’m just unlucky, and to start admitting that I make bad choices or that my emotional needs lead me into uncomfortable places. If we believe in telling the truth, the whole truth, perhaps as scary as it may be, we should start with a good honest talk with ourselves.
“And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free”
John 8:32 (NLT)
“Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.”
Romans 12:3
