Emotional appeal

April 25th 2003

Dear Friends

Life has its uncertainties – last month I skipped my payroll epistle due to a virus – (personal not computer), this month my plans were changed by Anne’s unexpected surgery. Thanks to all in the office who expressed care and concern.

I was standing at the till in Homebase the other day when a rather fetching lady in full display passed by. She caught the attention of another man who articulated his desires to her in a rather crass manner. “You’ve got to say it as you feel it” – he said realising that I was surprised by his audacity.

Why do we struggle to express our feelings appropriately? As a ‘truth’ based community we are more comfortable expressing our perceptions of doctrine in detail than the emotional consequences of these doctrines.

In 1910 Joyce Hall built an industry now known as Hallmark Cards to help people strengthen their relationships. They set out to create a line of loyalty building products to express the right emotion to the right people at the right time.  Which is similar in many respects to the work we are trying to achieve. They decided to define their company values in terms of: creativity, care, love, personal individuality, elegance, tradition, quality and value for money.

They discovered that ‘demonstrating care’ is at least twice as important than any other factor in maintaining and retaining loyalty in partnerships – business or otherwise. They also discovered that whilst people claim to be short of time, they always have time to talk about their emotional experiences – positive and negative!

May God continue to bless you as you continue to communicate the love and care that our Creator and Saviour first shared with each of us. Thank you for your service.

Yours truly,
