Make A Stand
Recently in our little church one of the members passed away. This is not surprising as in congregations around the world and in families everywhere people age and pass away whilst those they have nurtured remain to mourn their loss.
However there was a difference that bears mention here. All of those who spoke with me of his influence on them, his life and strong and often vocal support of the church shared one sentiment. They said “it was the end of an era” “things wouldn’t be the same again” he was spoken of as a foundation stone. Why?
Br Hector was a husband and father, a friend to many, an uncle figure to others and always had a ready smile and laugh to cheer you on your way. Clear on his beliefs and commitment to God he gave unwavering support to those things he held dear and was never hesitant to challenge un-biblical decisions. He knew what he was about. You could rely upon him to be clear and consistent. No matter whether his opinions were popular or unpopular he was more concerned with ideas of right and wrong and eternity than with gaining the fickle affections of the masses or the tempting allure of a peaceful life.
This made him stand out and begs us to look at our contribution to the world around us. In the spheres of activity in which we live are we making a difference? Would our loss cause people to wonder abut the shape and direction of our church? Are we consciously exercising our ability to influence, to positively speak with and care for others daily? Are we studying and upholding our beliefs or drifting idly into others as a result of peer influence?
It is time to make a stand and speak out for that which is right and to challenge endlessly and tirelessly that which is wrong. In all aspects of life, at church, at home and in society, the world needs now more than ever people who care enough to open their mouths and throw in their energies and support to make a positive difference. Too many good people are content to watch the fighting few and leave the struggle to them while those who tear down all that is good and worthwhile never seem short of energy or support. Wake up and wade in, your contribution however small it may seem to you, is needed to save the faith that you love.
Know what you believe, study it, pray about it and live it. Don't let your witness be silence or your message unclear. You are here to make a difference too.
Our heartfelt condolences go to the family and friends of Br Hector and our prayers go to all those who are bereaved and grieving at this time.
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.
For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.
We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died.
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves.
Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.
So encourage each other with these words.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13 - 18 (New Living Translation)
