Tribute Due!
December 14, 2009
Dear Friends
This day has significance for at least three reasons:
Anne and I celebrate 34 years of wedded bliss, though at this age, our capacity to forget and scope to forgive is well developed. Still, such joy is to be relished. My dearest took an almighty risk with a raucous rascal, and has sustained her care and dignity throughout. Tribute due!
Secondly, after a year exiled from the burning bush, alias Stanborough’s holy ground, we return to a building rejuvenated for purpose, fresh thinking, creative production and harmonious friendships. During this period the forbearance of friends and colleagues is testimony to the presence of God’s spirit, it is most sincerely appreciated. We have learned the blessing of closeness and experienced the working conditions endured by millions around us. Tribute due!
Thirdly, this letter accounts for 100 months in this role, giving the opportunity to reflect with some humility on my frivolity and frailty on the one hand and considered intent on the other. Would, that there were no contradictions! That you have indulged my flaws, tribute due!
I have followed several debates this month. One contrasted ‘hope’ as certainty, vs tentative assurance, the second was the outcome of fixed/talent based mindsets against those with learning/growth centred orientations, the third related to symbols of motivation in our service. Indeed, all three attach to my deliberate intent with this series of correspondence.
In attaching these epistles to the payroll I am conscious that none of us are motivated by the final number on the ‘blue slip’. While attention to the grocery store is unavoidable, we are driven by higher purposes. My intent is that these higher purposes are regularly expressed in my own life and those served. Further, in considering the seasonal gift I am conscious that symbols of grace transcend their economic value and express on behalf of Trustees our considered gratitude for your commitment and service. Tribute due!
As a people, we are conscious of our frailties and avoid presumption with respect to our salvation, not because we doubt the completion of God’s work, but because we relish the opportunity to grow. We are a learning people. Tribute due!
My personal goal is to be a continual learner, give evidence thereof, and to encourage ministers and members alike to grasp every opportunity to experience the nuances of God’s wisdom, love and grace. In this regard we have no special power other than to repeatedly invite those we serve. That you and your dearest are committed to this venture, tribute due.
May I wish you a joy filled Christmas – tribute due
