Sabrina in the television show is a teenager who is at high school with all the usual ups and downs that brings. She is pretty, friendly, and fun. She has boyfriends, girl friends, and there are some who make fun of her. So far, so normal - except for one thing. She is a witch.
As a personality, Sabrina is actually quite nice and caring, unless you think about it a bit more. You see Sabrina, in the show, has a witch’s power so she can and does punish those she doesn’t like turning them into animals, embarrassing them in front of people etc. She also uses her magic on her friends to prevent them doing or understanding anything she doesn’t want them to.
She uses her power to change the consequences of her friends and enemies actions. In short, Sabrina makes decisions about people’s lives and seeks to act on them with an unfair advantage although with rarely truly unselfish motives. This is why, I’m not sure I’d like a friend like Sabrina. In fact any friend who wants to make my choices secretly for me or shape my life around them - I wouldn’t really consider them a friend at all.
They’re much too controlling to respect my freedom of choice. They’re also human, like me, and so unable to be sure that they really understand what’s going on, and the long term consequences of their actions on me.
No, I’d want friends who are like me, a little unsure, confused, frequently wrong but willing to journey with me on an equal footing through life. I want to experience life’s ups and down and make my own choices (hopefully the right ones!) and learn from the experiences. I want to be mature enough so that I don’t need to be in control of everything. I’ll settle for learning to control myself!
The real problem with Sabrina is that no matter how good the intention may sound it’s tinged with selfishness and a biased view of life. Sure, we can all use extra help, but I’d rather stick with God. At least I know for sure that He has the power to do anything, the wisdom to know how and when to use it and the to love to do what is really best for me even if I don’t get it.
What about you?
“The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.
I will advise you and watch over you.”
