Can dead men walk?

 

 

This is a true story. It comes from the Bible. It’s a story about something amazing that Jesus did. I know he did lots of amazing things but this was so special that people didn’t even know what to say. You see it all started like this…

 

Jesus was with his friends in a village. He was busy explaining to people about God and how much he cared for them. He didn’t want them to get confused about what was right and wrong just because some of the church goers (who were really show-offs and didn’t really love God at all) would ignore what God wanted them to do, so they could do what they wanted. They were very selfish.

 

Anyway while he was busy explaining to people he was told that a friend of his, Lazarus was sick. Jesus was good friends with Lazarus. They would sit around and talk, and sometimes he would stay at Lazarus’ house. Lazarus lived with his two sisters, Mary and Martha. Mary was the quiet one and Martha was the busy one. Always cooking or cleaning or talking. You know the type.

 

Well everyone expected Jesus to be very upset to hear his good friend Lazarus was sick. They may even have expected him to go visit him. ( I’d visit if my friend was sick, wouldn’t you?) but he didn’t. Two days later he said Lazarus was sleeping. Well that’s good news isn’t it? If you are feeling sick and you get lots of sleep maybe it will help you feel better. His friends though it was good that Lazarus was asleep, but that wasn’t what Jesus meant. He explained that Lazarus was dead. He called it sleeping because being dead is like being asleep. You don’t know what’s going on and you can’t see or talk to anybody and it’s just like being in a deep sleep.

 

So Jesus went to where Lazarus’ body was and Mary and Martha, Lazarus’ sisters went too. Everyone was very sad, Jesus cried. And he told them to move the big stone that was blocking the entrance to the cave that Lazarus’ body was in.

No! said his sister Martha, “ he’s been dead for four days now. There will be a really bad smell. Jesus asked her to trust him and the men moved the stone.

 

Everyone went quiet, why would anyone want to see or smell a dead body? What was Jesus going to do? Then Jesus said “Lazarus come here” and guess what happened? Lazarus did.

 

Jesus made him alive again. Everyone was so shocked and so happy. Jesus did this to explain to people that even though people we love might die, and it makes us sad when they do, that he still has plans for them. He will let them sleep while dead but when it’s time he will come back to earth and make them alive again.

 

While they are dead, they aren’t in any pain and nothing is worrying them. They don’t know or think anything, just like being in a deep sleep when you are really tired. But when he comes back to earth, he can make them alive again so all the people who are his friends can live with him forever.

 

Now isn’t that amazing.
