Lenny and the School Bully (Janice really)

Lenny was a very quiet boy who spent most of this time with his head down in a book.

Not that that’s a bad thing to do but because he was always reading it just made him a

target for bullies. Now the bully in question was a really big boy who was in the same

form as Lenny, his name was Sonny. Sonny loved to tease Lenny. He would constantly

pick on him in class, on the playground and even in the canteen during lunch break.

Lenny didn’t know what to do, he didn’t want to complain to the teacher in case the bully

got really angry and the other children called him a tattle tale and he didn’t really want to

worry his parents.

So what was he going to do?

Now Lenny had really lovely lunches, you know the type, yummy sandwiches, nice cold

drinks, a favourite biscuit or crisps or a delicious slice of cake.  He always looked

forward to seeing what his mum had put in his lunch box. The problem was that he was

not the only one who looked forward to seeing the lunch he got. Can you guess who the

other person was? Yes, you guessed right it was Sonny. And if Sonny decided that he

liked what he saw he would try everything he could to get it.  He wouldn’t ask, he would

just demand it or try to grab it from Lenny.

Lenny was at a complete loss he just wanted it all to stop.  Just as he was thinking

about how he would actually go about solving the problem, he remembered something

his mother told him. She told him that bullies were often really scared inside and

sometimes that’s what made them act really horrible.  She said sometimes if you stand

up to them and tell them no firmly they usually back off because they are not used to

people standing up to them.

So Lenny decided to try that. He was really scared but he said a little prayer before he

went to school to ask Jesus to help him say the right words but in a kind way. You know

what happened?  When Sonny demanded Lenny’s lunch Lenny looked him in the face

and said "NO Sonny" I think what you are doing is really wrong and I am not going to give

in to you anymore. That’s it!"

And you know something, even though his heart was beating really hard, to his

amazement, Sonny said "OK" with a very shocked look on his face and he slowly walked

away. Sonny was happy not only because he stood up to the bully but because he

realised that Jesus had helped him do it.

Maybe you know someone who is being bullied or is a bully. Maybe you are being

bullied yourself, even though it may be really scary, talk to Jesus and talk to an adult you

trust , You may not feel that you can do what Lenny did.  But you can ask an adult to help

you and there is  nothing too scary that  Jesus cannot handle.
