How to pray

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phillipians 4:6-7 (NLT)

Burgled

I was living alone in my first apartment. One day I returned home to find my front door wide open and everything scattered across the floor. The money in my draw (which wasn’t even mine) and my TV were gone.   The door had been kicked in and the lock was broken. I wasn’t sure what to do until my upstairs neighbour came and explained that we had all been burgled and he would take me to the police station.

I gave a report of what was lost and began to worry about what my mother would say when she found her money had been stolen from my drawer. I knew I would never hear the end of it. I prayed that God would help and the next day the police called to say they had the money as they had caught the thieves a few doors down from my place.

Relieved I got the money back but not the TV Then while I was at the police station to collect the money I looked up and saw it in the policemen’s lounge on a high shelf with all the policemen watching the football!  I wasn’t sure how to get it back and was frightened of offending them. I made conversation with the sergeant who was dealing with me and eventually explained that it was my TV

Naively I thought they would have just given it to me but instead they offered to give me a report saying any TV I wanted was lost so they could keep mine and I could claim off the insurance. They explained that it was the perfect size for their shelf. I had no insurance and didn’t want to be dishonest so I declined and left without my TV

I was too shy and feeling too vulnerable to insist and they said they’d drop it round for me. It never came. I called a couple of times to find out when it was coming but that made no difference. I had asked God to help me with the money but now I needed his help with the TV then sure enough a policeman from a neighbouring station turned up at my house with it.
